In the course of translating English verse into Chinese there appeared two opposing forms: traditional Chinese style and modem free style, with various hybrid forms in between. On the basis of previous research in this field the paper compares three versions of Byron' s poem When We Two Parted, concluding that of all forms available the rhymed and rhythmical verse in vernacular Chinese is a better candidate and that "Yindun (syllabic and semantic unit) for foot" as its milestone principle has its merits. It also makes the point that the principle should be practiced within limits and the form should under no circumstances be pursued at the cost of the content.
