This paper reports the results of feeding batches of Anopheles dirus (Hainan strain) successively on a monkey infected with small ring stage of plasmodium cynomolgi bastianellii. 40 batches of mosquitoes were fed on the monkey from 2nd-12th day after parasite inoculation. 10 to 30 mosquitoes from each batch were dissectced on the 6th or 7th day after infection and the oocysts were counted. The infection rate of mosquitoes and the mean oocyst count per infected mosquito were taken as the criteria to evaluate the viability of the gametocytes. The blood films were taken when mosquitoes fed, and the number of asexual, schizont parasites and the mature gametocytes were counted by routine method. The conclusions drawn from this work are: (1)The development time required from merozoites to functional mature gametocytes would be approximately 55±1 hours in the second generation and 65±1 hours in the third generation. (2)The longest life-span of the gametocytes could be over 100 hours. (3)The infectivity of gametocytes to mosquitoes reached the highest level during the late stage of trophozoites of the next generation (i.e.24±4 hours after the schizogony). (4)The infective stage (being infective to mosquito) of gametocytes remained as long as 12-42 hours in the second generation and 10-19 hours in the third generation. (5)There is no marked correlation between the gametocyte density and the mean oocyst count. The infectivity of gametocytes of the first or second generation to mosquitoes was better than that of the third or fourth generation.
