摘要
本文首先以R.Quirk提出的六条标准为依据,逐条论证了连词and的连词地位,从而证明了and是一个具有很强连接功能的中心并列连词。通过分析,文章接着说明了and所连接的各部分在逻辑上存在多种语义关系。文章最后指出,and作为一个连接词向来不被人们所重视,研究and的连接功能及它所表达的语义关系在英语教学上是很有意义的。
This paper is a study of the semantic and syntactic functious of the conjunction “and”.Through point by point verihcation , the paper first of all shows that “and” as a conjunction meets all the six criteria proposed by R. Quirk, thus proving it is a central coordinator. From a semantic point of view, the paper then discusses the different semantic relationships “and” has when acting as a clause linker. The paper also points out it is of pedagogical importance to study the semantic and syntactic functions of “and” and be aware of the different meanings it conveys as a central coordinator.
