The effects of saponins of Panaxquinquefolium leaf and stem(SPQ)on the KCl-aCl2 and norepinephrine(NE)-induced contrac-tions of isolated rabbit aortic strips were studied.SPQantagonised the contractions induced by KCl,CaCl2 and NE in a non-competitive manner.Theblockade effect of SPQ on the NE-induced contrac-tion was the same as on the potassium depolarized-in-duced one.To the intracellular Ca2+-dependent compo-nent of NE-induced contraction, SPQ exerted the obvi-ous blockad action only at higher concentration. Theresults suggest that the effect of SPQ blocking theCa2+ channel on vascular smooth muscle might be re-lated to the inhibition of Ca2+ influx through potentialdependent Ca2+ channel and receptor operatedCa2+ channel.
