Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance witnessed the rise of Italian language as a literary language, and the Italian cultural elites had a heated debate on the value and criterion of Italian Volgare (vernacular) as means of literary expression, which was generally known as the “Questione della Lingua” . The “Questione della Lingua” lasted for centuries, and in the 16th century, a certain standard literary Italian based on Tuscan dialect was identified and recognized by the majority of cultural elites. It was this standard literary Italian that became one of the important factors molding the cultural and national identity of Italians in the long run and also laid a foundation for the very “national language” of modern Italy. Therefore, an inquiry into the “Questione della Lingua” of Italy in Renaissance will be of significance to understand the Italian cultural life in Renaissance more deeply and also helpful to understand the language and culture of early modern Europe.
