The mechanical properties of fiber reinforced metal matrix composites, especially the axial tensive property, are influenced significantly by the interface between fiber and matrix. To control the interface bonding strength, a soft layer was set in the interface in C/Alcomposite. The fracture mode was improved and high axial tensile strength was achieved with soft interface layer. It was found experimentally that the thicknees of the soft layer plays an important role in the strength and fracture mode of the composite. Brittle fracture occured at a lower stress with a thinner soft layer3 but if the soft layer was too thick, it would be destroyed at a lower stress. Both covers reduced the tensile strength of the composIte.
