The thermal and mechanical properties of ZrO2 and the evolution of thermal barrier coatings were introduced. The failure mechanism of ZrO2 thermal barrier coatings and corresponding improvements were discussed. The advantages and existing problems of ZrO2 graded thermal barrier coatings were elucidated.
