In the medium of HAc-NaAc(pH=5. 0), Nb(V) reacts with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone (PMBP) to form a complex, and appear a sharp polarographic wave on DME and a voltammetric curve on HMDE at - 0. 96 V(vs. SCE). The peak height is linear with the concentration of Nb(V) in the range of 0. 0075-0. 80 μg/mL and 0. 000075-0. 0075 μg/mL, respectively. Interferences from more than thirty ions were tested. The method is used to determine niobium in steel after separation by phenylarsonic acid with high sensitivity, the detection limit is 0. 00003 μg/mL. The stability of the solution can be remained for more than 96 h. The ratio of Nb to PMBP in the complex is 1 : 1 and the complex is positive. The number of electron transfer is 2. The wave is an adsorptive wave. The peak current is produced by the reduction of the ligand PMBP in the complex.
