William Faulkner’s masterpiece The Sound and the Fury depicts the decline of the once distinguished Compson family in the South from the viewpoints of the three Compson children and the author himself. Critics generally analyze the cause of the collapse of the Compson family from the historical point of view, believing that its collapse is due to the rising of the capitalism in the North and the decline of the plantation slavery system in the South. The thesis is intended to analyze the topographic model of the human psyche of the three Compson children from the perspective of psychology and seek a new interpretation of the breakdown of the Compson family. The change of the history must leave traces on human minds. And Faulkner also thinks that only the human heart in conflict deserves writing, and it is the inner conflict in the characters that produces good works.
