摘要
It appears important for various circles to summarize and reconsider the past and learn experiences for preparing for the future. We have also done so in the field of population of China by devoting three issues of the journal’s “Population and Development Forum” in discussing population science, population policy, and population theory that have been evolved over the last 5 decades. This time our concern is placed on the role of population theories in the population practice of China. The invited scholars take a historical perspective in looking at the theoretical thinking of population practice, and convey the critique that theoretical construction has been weak despite a great wealth of research results. The many years and diversified processes of population practices in China could have given birth to the Chinese theoretical system and Chinese theorticians in population. We are now on the eve of theoretical innovations.
