Boron nitride (BN) nanotubes were fabricated by heating a mixture of boron, silicon and silica powders in a flowing ammonia gas at 1423 K. The products were examined by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fournier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The diameter of BN nanotubes is in the range of 20 similar to 50 nm. and the length is up to several tens of mu m. BN nanotubes have opened or closed ends and no nanoparticles appeared at the ends of nanotubes. It is suggested that the formation of BN nanotubes could be attributed to an oxide-assisted growth mechanism. In comparison with the infrared spectra of polycrystalline hexagonal BN, an extra small absorbing band appears at 1520 cm(-1) for the as-prepared BN nanotubes, which is related with the one-dimensional nanostructure of BN nanotubes.
