The criterion of productive forces is the key point of Marxist historical materialism,
and constitutes the philosophical foundation for Dent Xiaoping's theory. It has the
methodological function and plays an important role with the Chinese Socialist Charac-
teristics. We will not understand the essence of Deng Xiaoping'theory and grasp the
basic way of his thought properly without the criterion of productive forces.
