Abstract The structural adjustment reform started in mid-1980s in African countries has brought about profound changes in African economy,transforming patterns of its development,bringing into it the rational and efficient operational mechanism of market economy:it has strenghtenned Africa's economic viability and competitiveness,nurtured and prospered its market, improved its industrial structure,and pushed forward its economic growth.However,effects of the reform vary in different countries,and a long period of time is still needed for the reform to give full play.The chief difficulties and problems met in the reform are such as poor results in mobilizing domestic savings and investment,weak responses in the supply of agricultural product for export,little effect for the macro-economic transformation,and rather great negative impact on the manufacturing industry.The reform needs to deepen itself with an improved formula.It should help Africa acquire sustainable development and eliminate poverty.
