The Baojiatang Site is situated on a gently-sloping terrace north of the Baojiatang Village of Baibi Township, Anyang Municipality, Henan Province, cut into two halves by a gully road running through it from north to south, with a total area of 150,000 sq m. A formal excavation of the site was carried out in the autumn of 1965 with a total of 262 sq m opened up.It is one of the important sites of the Yangshao Culture in northern Henan and southern Hebei, and the simple stratigraphical deposits and cultural contents show that it is typical of the Dasikong type of the Yangshao Culture. The excavation uncovered the remains of two kilns, 32 ashpits and over 300 pieces of pottery, stone, bone and shell artifacts. The kilns are well preserved, consisting of a firedoor, a fire chamber, flues and a baking chamber. The discoverey of these well-preserved kilns provides concrete material for studying pottery-baking techniques at that time. The pottery objects discovered are mainly gray ware made of fine clay and sandy clay, mostly with a plain or burnished surface, decorated with basket patterns along with cord and string designs. There are the bowl, basin, pot, lid and some other shapes. The number of painted vessels is small and most of them are red-painted with arch-sided triangles, zigzags, nets, rings, 'butterfly palps', etc., over ten kinds in all. The features of these objects show that they are of the Dasikong type of the Yangshao Culture and that this type belongs to a later period in comparison with theHougang type. Therefore, the Baojiatang-Dasikong type belongs to the late period of the Yangshao Culture in the border region between northern Henan and southern Hebei, presenting a transitional tendency towards the Longshan Culture.
