An image, as Ezra Pound suggests, is that, which presents an intellectual and emotional com-plex in an instant of time. It aims at suggesting or evoking a picture in the reader's mind ratherthan offering a complete statement. The chief function of the use of images is to render com-plex, abstract experience in vivid, concrete terms. Imagery consists in all the images taken togetherin a work of literature. Often the meaning of a poem does not lie in separate images but in theinterplay and interrelation of images. In fiction, where images are less conspicuous and more sporadic, imagery acquires special signi-ficance through re-iterated use. In the works of some modern authors, parallels are drawn betweennatural environment and the mind of the character, thus lifting nature into active association withthe mysterious workings of consciousness. In the mean time, imagery associated with machineryhas intruded into much of British and American fiction, often used as a means of revealing thedehumanization characteristic of the modern western world.
