摘要
《在中国的屏风上》和《面纱》是毛姆创作的最具代表性的关于中国和中国文化的作品。毛姆在这两部作品中对中国文化尤其是道教文化的理解和阐释,透射出他坚信中国的道家思想是拯救西方世界的良方,也是拯救西方人精神世界的强心剂的缘由。在对东方尤其是对中国文化的不断探寻中,毛姆最终把崇尚自然、追求自由的道家思想作为自己的精神归宿。
Maugham's special interest in oriental culture inspires him to create many works about the Orient and China.On the Chinese Screen and The Painted Veil are the representative works about China and Chinese culture.This essay analyzes Maugham's deepening understanding on Chinese culture,especially Taoism,and expounds the reasons why Maugham believes that Taoism will save the western world and the western people.It points out that Maugham finally takes Taoism as his own spiritual destination after persistent studies of Chinese culture.
