Among ancient religious sculptures in China, those in present day Quanzhou are unique in being the largest collection based on Hindu motif. Whether the artists were Chinese or Indian, and where the style originated from are questions which have puzzled art historians of the 20th century. Without major new discoveries in archaeology, these questions will always remain an enigma. The present paper focuses on the possibility that the style actually originated from those in South India during the Chola dynasty. The author compares each sculpture in Quanzhou to corresponding ones in South India. Together, they constitute compelling evidences that these Quanzhou sculptures were copies of the Chola style, but generated by artists of local training.
