The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology et al.conducted excavations at the Yumin site in Huade County from 2010-2016.The excavation area covers 3750 square meters.Uncovered features include 14 round houses, one midden ditch and one grave, along with objects made of stone, pottery, and bone,as well as faunal remains. This site, dating to the early Neolithic and located in the southern edge of the Northern Zone steppe,is heretofore the earliest, most complete, and most culturally distinctive settlement discovered in the region. It thus can be considered a new archaeological culture:the Yumin culture. This discovery fills a gap in early Neolithic Northern Zone steppe archaeological cultures, and also provides substantial material data for the study of the early cultural exchange in Northeast Asia, the cultural implications of the early Neolithic Mongolian Plateau,as well as the developmental processes of environmental and subsistence patterns.
