The Grand Canal, which runs through the north and south, was the core route for Jesuits entering China from Macao region during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The convenient transportation provided by the Grand Canal not only played a significant role in the development of missionary work, but also created favorable conditions for the connection between the missionary areas of the missionary communities as well as the promotion of missionary experience, making many cities along the canal gradually develop into important bases for the development of Catholicism in the Ming and Qing Dynasty.Based on the records of western missionaries and the Chinese literature, this paper investigates the development of Catholicism along the Huaiyang Canal and Jiangnan Canal in Ming and Qing Dynasty, and discusses the role played by the Grand Canal in the process of Catholicism spreading in this period.
