(American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions)广州印刷所的传教印工。
Between 1833 and 1857,Samuel Wells Williams was a missionary-printer in charge of the Canton Press of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions(ABCFM).In the 19 th century,Christian missionaries in China had advocated replacing traditional block printing with Western movable types and Williams played a very active role in that process.Several aspects of Williams’significance in the process are discussed in the present paper:first, helping Samuel Dyer,a missionary of the London Missionary Society,in fundraising for making types;second, bringing about the actual production of a set of Chinese types initiated by Auguste Beyerhaus,a Berlin type-cutter;third,possessing and using a set of Chinese types originally produced by English East India Company Press in Macao;and fourth, writing, editing and leaving a large quantity of valuable materials on Western style Chinese movable types.
