The outputs of 20th century climate simulation by eighteen GCMs were used to evaluate the models' ability to reproduce tropical cyclone genesis via the GPI. The GCMs were found in general to reasonably reproduce the observed spatial distribution of genesis. Some of the models also showed ability in capturing observed temporal variation. Based on the evaluation, the models (CGCM3.1-T47 and IPSL-CM4) found to perform best when reproducing both spatial and temporal features were chosen to project future GPI. Results show that both of these models project an upward trend of the GPI under the SRES A2 scenario, however the rate of increase differs between them.展开更多

The decadal change of "tropical cyclones activities are closely related to the decadal changes of atmospheric general circulation in the troposphere, which provide favorable or unfavorable conditions for the formation of tropical cyclone. Furthermore, based on the simulation of corresponding atmospheric general circulation from a coupled climate model under the schemes of Intergovemmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),special report on emission scenarios (SRES) A2 and B2 emissions scenarios an outlook on the tropical cyclone frequency generated over the western North Pacific in the coming half century is presented. It is indicated that in response to the global climate change the general circulation of atmosphere would become unfavorable for the formation of tropical cyclone as a whole and the frequency of tropical cyclones formation would likely decrease by 5% within the next half century, although more tropical cyclones would appear during a short period in it.展开更多

This paper aims to study the impact of the Very Severe Cyclonic storm PHAILIN, and its consequence on the surface chlorophyll-aconcentration distribution in the Bay of Bengal using Oceansat-2 Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM). The impact of this cyclone on ocean primary productivity has been studied using MODIS-A data. Sea surface temperature (SST) plays an important role in the generation of primary productivity along with the other oceanographic parameters;SST patterns in the Bay of Bengal during the cyclone period were studied. From the analysis, it is observed that the chlorophyll-aconcentration has increased from 1.08 (before) to 7.06 mg/m3 after the cyclone with an SST drop of ~3°C (29.19°C to 26°C). The primary productivity has increased from 410.0506 to 779.9814 mg/C/m2/day after the cyclone. In addition to the above analysis, an attempt has also been made to study the impact of cyclone intensity on the chlorophyll concentration. The study shows that the comparison between cyclone intensity (CI) and chlorophyll concentration shows a positive relationship.展开更多

One is a statistical model using preceding predictors from the observation, and the other is a hybrid model using both the aforementioned preceding predictors and concurrent summer large-scale environmental conditions from the NCEP Climate Forecast System version 2(CFSv2).(1) For the statistical model, the year-to-year increment method is adopted to analyze the predictors and their physical processes, and the JJA number of LTCs in China is then predicted by using the previous boreal summer sea surface temperature(SST) in Southwest Indonesia, preceding October South Australia sea level pressure, and winter SST in the Sea of Japan. The temporal correlation coefficient between the observed and predicted number of LTCs during 1983–2017 is 0.63.(2) For the hybrid prediction model, the prediction skill of CFSv2 initiated each month from February to May in capturing the relationships between summer environmental conditions(denoted by seven potential factors: three steering factors and four genesis factors) and the JJA number of LTCs is firstly evaluated. For the 2-and 1-month leads, CFSv2 has successfully reproduced these relationships. For the 4-, 3-, and 2-month leads, the predictor of geopotential height at 500 h Pa over the western North Pacific(WNP) shows the worst forecasting skill among these factors. In general, the summer relative vorticity at 850 h Pa over the WNP is a modest predictor, with stable and good forecasting skills at all lead times.展开更多
