In this study, the effect of the pH of corrosive media on the galvanic corrosion of 2024 A1 alloy/Q235 mild steel/304 stainless steel tri-metallic couples was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, scanning electron microscopy, scanning vibrating electrode technique and a multi-channel galvanic corrosion meter. The results show that 2024 always acts as the only anode in 3.5 wt% NaCl at pH 5.56,9.72 and 12.0, while both Q235 and 2024 act as anodes at pH 2.39 in the initial stage and then the role of Q235 changes at longer coupling time, which can be attributed to the effect of pH on the surface film of 2024. It is also found that the galvanic current density of a tri-metallic couple is the superposition of two bi-metallic couples when cathodic reactions are controlled by the diffusion of oxygen, otherwise it is smaller than that of the sum of two bi-metallic couples. The localized corrosion instead of uniform corrosion of anodic metal is accelerated by galvanic corrosion.展开更多

Potentiodynamic polarization curves revealed that the BPIE acts as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements confirmed the corrosion inhibition effect of the BPIE. As the inhibitor concentration increased, the charge transfer resistance increased and the double layer capacitance decreased due to more inhibitor adsorption on the surface. The results obtained by analysis of electrochemical noise (EN) data in time and frequency domains are in good agreement with EIS and polarization results. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to investigate the corrosion inhibition of the BPIE. SEM images showed that the corrosion damage of the alloy surface reduced in the presence of BPIE. The intensity of the XRD peaks corresponding to magnesium-rich α phase increased in the presence of BPIE, indicating lower corrosion of alloy sample. Also, EDX analysis approved the corrosion inhibition performance of the BPIE. The studied Schiff base compound acts by physical adsorption on the alloy surface and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir isotherm.展开更多

Its design configuration which involves the flow of cold and hot fluids within the exchanger subjects it to corrosion attack. The article utilized the principle of mass and energy conservation in the development of weight and temperature models to study the effect of corrosion on mild steel coupon inside the exchanger containing water and Mono ethanol amine (MEA). The models developed were resolved analytically using Laplace Transform and simulated using Excel as simulation tool and data obtained from experiment in the laboratory to obtain profiles of weight loss and temperature as a function of time. The weight loss and performance of mild steel under various corrosive conditions were examined which indicates the effect of corrosion on the mild steel heat exchanger in water and MEA media. The result shows that water is more corrosive than MEA at higher temperatures and at lower temperatures of 35°C and 1 atm, MEA has inhibitive properties than water as indicated by the weight loss result with time. The comparative analysis between the results obtained from the model simulation and experimental results shows that the result obtained from the model is more reliable and demonstrated better performance characteristics as it clearly shows mild steel heat exchanger experiences more corrosive effect in water medium than MEA at higher temperatures. And at lower temperatures, MEA becomes more inhibitive and less corrosive than water. The model simulation results correlate with various literatures and hence, it is valid for future referencing.展开更多
