Shakespeare's sonnets created during 1592 to 1598 is not only one of the greatest achievements of his, but also a great leap forward to sonnet itself. With the development of sonnets, Chinese poets begin to learn from western traditional sonnets. Among these poets, Bai Ma is a typical representative. In Eve Sedgwick's influential queer study book Between Men: English Literature and Male Homosocial Desire, she first interpreted the relationship within the model of erotic triangle. On the basis of Sedgwick's theory, the triangle relationship in the Sonnets is analyzed—Shakespeare constructs an erotic triangle where males by identifying, cooperating, and competing with each other, maintain their homosocial bond upon heterosexual but misogynous desires towards a female. The contradictory relationship reflects Shakespeare's struggle vis-à-vis a Renaissance literary theme: rationality versus passion, with the former mounting over the latter.展开更多

It is out of the question to make a comprehensive study of all the related research works. However, when discussing the themes of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the countless disputes mainly fall into three categories, namely, homosexual school, non homosexual school, and neutral school. Each school seems to have reasonable proofs for their arguments, yet actually none of them is convincing enough to stand severe reasoning. What the endless disputes disclose to us is just people’s endless enthusiasm in Shakespeare’s works. To understand the Sonnets in a scientific way,we need to take the Author’ s social background and his marital conditions into consideration and take a positive approach to the appreciation of the Sonnets.展开更多
