The sonnet as a poetic form has retained its vitality in English poetry for more than four hundred years since it was introduced from Italian literature, while Don Paterson,a Scottish poet in the 21st century, subverted and reconstructed the poetic norms in 40 Sonnets.A new style characterized with patterns, nonsense letters and prose forms instead of the Petrarchan or Shakespearean convention has been applied in Patersons sonnet composition, which breaks the barrier between sonnets and contemporary popular culture. However,Paterson has never put the sonnet tradition aside.Through the form of concrete poetry,he has brought entertainment back to the sonnet and attempted to interpret the social interpersonal relationship in the 21st century with the character relationship mode in the Petrarchan convention. While rewriting and reinterpreting Shakespeares sonnets,Paterson has built a bridge between the contemporary time and the Renaissance age,and infused the multicultural elements into both the form and the theme of the sonnet in English poetry.
