However, Yen Fuh’s evaluation of the Taoist classics, for all its social and academic value, has not been given due attention. Actually Yen Fuh’s evaluation of the Taoist classics is a dialogue between him and Kang Youwei. On the other hand Yen Fuh was also influenced by the 1904-1905 war between Japan and Russia. He regarded the war as the triumph of the Japanese constitutional monarchy over the Russian autocratic monarchy. Yen Fuh thought China should learn from Japan and he began to deliver his idea of constitutional monarchy by means of combining Lao Zi’s Taoism with Herbert Spencer’s sociology. In this aspect Yen Fuh is typical of the modern Chinese scholars who have tried to interpret the Western democracy from the perspective of traditional Chinese classics.展开更多
