Observable broadening and appearance of an extra small feature at the longer-wavelength side shoulder of the PL peak occur under 2.5% strain, which could indicate the direct-indirect bandgap transition and is further confirmed by our density-functional-theory calculations. As the strain increases further, the spectral weight of the indirect transition gradually increases. Over the entire strain range, with the increase of the strain, the light emissions corresponding to each optical transition, such as the direct bandgap transition (K-K) and indirect bandgap transition (F-K, ≥2.5%), exhibit a monotonous linear redshift. In addition, the binding energy of the indirect transition is found to be larger than that of the direct transition, and the slight lowering of the trion dissociation energy with increasing strain is observed. The strain was used to modulate not only the electronic band structure but also the lattice vibrations. The softening and splitting of the in-plane E' mode is observed under uniaxial tensile strain, and polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy confirms the observed zigzag-oriented edge of WS2 grown by CVD in previous studies. These findings enrich our understanding of the strained states of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials and lay a foundation for developing applications exploiting their strain-dependent optical properties, including the strain detection and light-emission modulation of such emerging two-dimensional TMDs.展开更多

We also summarized the recent progress in the modification of the transition metal oxides and mixed oxides with rare earth ions. In the first section, we surveyed a variety of rare-earth elements modified TiO2 photocatalysts. Attributed to the modifica-tion with rare-earth elements, phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile was inhibited. Furthermore, the light-absorbing property of the TiO2 modified with rare-earth elements was also enhanced. In the second section, we summarized the effects of rare-earth elements on the modification of transition metal mixed oxides. It was believed that the corner-shared octahedral units in the form of networks, chains and slabs within the mixed oxide lattice were essential for the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. In the last section, the strategy for the design of NIR or IR response upconversion composite photocatalysts was also discussed.展开更多

Here we report the functional characterization of the CDC5 gene in Arabidopsis thaliana. Arabidopsis CDC5 (AtCDC5) is mainly expressed in tissues with high cell division activity, and is expressed throughout the entire process of embryo formation. The AtCDC5 loss-of-function mutant is embryonic lethal. In order to investigate the function of AtCDC5 in vivo, we generated AtCDC5-RNAi plants in which the expression of AtCDC5 was reduced by RNA interference. We found that the G2 to M (G2/M) phase transition was affected in the AtCDC5-RNAi plants, and that endoreduplication was increased. Additionally, the maintenance of shoot apical meristem (SAM) function was disturbed in the AtCDC5-RNAi plants, in which both the WUSCHEL (WUS)- CLAVATA (CLV) and the SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) pathways were impaired. In situ hybridization analysis showed that the expression of STMwas greatly reduced in the shoot apical cells of the AtCDC5-RNAi plants. Moreover, cyclinB1 or Histone4 was found to be expressed in some of these cells when the transcript of STM was undetectable. These results suggest that AtCDC5 is essential for the G2/M phase transition and may regulate the function of SAM by controlling the expression ofSTMand WUS.展开更多

The solvents trioctylamine (TOA) and oleylamine (OAM) are found to play important roles in the formation of MoSe2 microspheres, whereby TOA determines the three-dimensional (3D) microspherical morphology and OAM directs the formation of MoSes monolayer flakes. The robust 3D MoSe2 microspheres exhibit remarkable activity and durability for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid, maintaining a small onset overpotential of -77 mV and keeping a small overpotential of 100 mV for a current density of 5 mA/cm2 after 1,000 cycles. In addition, similar 3D WSe2 microspheres can also be prepared by using this method. We expect this facile colloidal route could further be expanded to synthesize other porous structures which will find applications in fields such as in energy storage, catalysis, and sensing.展开更多
