Sludge samples were collected from the drying beds, air-dried, sieved through 2 mm and stored in plastic bags at room temperature. Sludge density, particle size distribution, water holding capacity, void volume, pH, EC, total organic carbon and hydrophobicity were determined. Results showed the bulk density is about 1.18 g/cm3 whereas the real density is 2.12 g/cm3 and void volume is 50%;Particle size distribution showed that the major size of sludge is sand-like size (630 - 200 μm) and the minor size is silt-like size (200 - 20 μm) and clay-like size is less than 20 μm. Sludge has an acidic pH reaction (6.78 ± 0.02) with an electric conductivity equal to (2.49 ± 0.04) mS?cm-1. The hydrophobicity of sludge is very high, water drop penetration time (WDPT) is 114.77 ± 18.78 sec with a radius of 0.44 ± 0.08 cm. In the way around, oil drop penetration time (ODPT) of sludge is 5.05 ± 1.28 sec with a radius of 1.25 ± 0.14 cm. The WDPT/ODPM ration has very high value 22.73 indicating extreme hydrophobicity. High value of hydrophobicity may reduce water filtration in soil when sludge applied for agriculture. These results suggest that sludge application to soil may change the physicochemical properties of soil.展开更多

It was found that the as-cast BMG specimens exhibited a brittle-ductile transition when the larger specimens were machined into smaller specimens through removing the cast-softening surface layer by layer. After compression tests, the as-machined small specimens, owing to the absence of the cast-softening surface, displayed highly dense and intersecting shear bands, and extensive plastic deformation. This is in contrast to the catastrophic failure and low deformability in the as-cast large specimens. More free volume was detected in the smaller as-fractured specimens, by differential scanning calorimetry, which may be attributed to the occurrence of strain softening and increased plasticity. Compared with the relatively smooth fracture surface in the smaller specimens, the larger specimens showed more diverse features on the fracture surface due to their graded structures.展开更多

Then the related physical properties, such as structural stability, lattice constants, formation enthalpies, elastic constants and bulk moduli, are obtained by ab initio calculations. Based on the calculated results of formation enthalpies, the ground-state convex hull is derived for the Pt-Zr system. The calculated physical data would provide a basis for further thermodynamic calculations and atomistic simulations. For these Pt-Zr compounds, it is found there are a positive linear correlation between the formation enthalpies and atomic volumes, and a negative linear correlation between the bulk modules and atomic volumes.展开更多

The as-cast specimens were first annealed at 743 K for 10 min, and then pre-compressed under 800 MPa for 1, 3, 5 and 10 h, respectively. The results indicated that annealing resulted in the formation of nanocrystals with a diameter of -10 nm in the amorphous matrix and a drastic decrease of the free volume, leading to complete loss of the plasticity of the BMG. Applying pre-compression under a stress of 800 MPa for a proper duration (5 h) resumed part of the lost free volume in the BMG matrix and therefore partially recovered the plasticity. A very long period of pre-compression (10 h) decreased the free volume again, which was caused by the excessive crystal growth.展开更多
