A high-efficiency inverse design of"digital"subwavelength nanophotonic devices using the adjoint method is proposed.We design a single-mode 3dB power divider and a dual-mode demultiplexer to demonstrate the ...A high-efficiency inverse design of"digital"subwavelength nanophotonic devices using the adjoint method is proposed.We design a single-mode 3dB power divider and a dual-mode demultiplexer to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed inverse design approach,called the digitized adjoint method,for single-and dual-object optimization,respectively.The optimization comprises three stages:1)continuous variation for an"analog"pattern;2)forced permittivity biasing for a"quasi-digital"pattern;and 3)a multilevel digital pattern.Compared with the conventional brute-force method,the proposed method can improve design efficiency by about five times,and the performance optimization can reach approximately the same level.The method takes advantages of adjoint sensitivity analysis and digital subwavelength structure and creates a new way for the efficient and high-performance design of compact digital subwavelength nanophotonic devices,which could overcome the efficiency bottleneck of the brute-force method,which is restricted by the number of pixels of a digital pattern,and improve the device performance by extending a conventional binary pattern to a multilevel one.展开更多
The effect of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the intumescent flame retardant(IFR)poly(lactic acid)(PLA)composites was investigated among a series of PLA/IFR/MXene,which were prepared by melt blending 0-2.0 wt%MXene,10.0 wt...The effect of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the intumescent flame retardant(IFR)poly(lactic acid)(PLA)composites was investigated among a series of PLA/IFR/MXene,which were prepared by melt blending 0-2.0 wt%MXene,10.0 wt%-12.0 wt%IFR and PLA together.The results of limiting oxygen index(LOI)and vertical burning(UL-94)discover that the combination of 0.5 wt%MXene and 11.5 wt%IFR synergistically improves the fire safety of PLA to reach UL-94 V-0 rating with LOI value of 33.0%.The PLA/IFR/MXene composites perform an obvious reduction in peak of heat release rate(HRR)in cone calorimeter tests(CCTs).Furthermore,the carbon residues after CCTs were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),laser Raman spectroscopy(LRS),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).It is demonstrated that both the titanium composition of the MXene structure and the characteristics of the two-dimensional material enhance the PLA/IFR/MXene composite materials’ability to produce a dense barrier layer to resist burnout during thermal degradation.展开更多

The effect of weight fraction of MWCNTs on microstructural e...In-situ TiC and remained multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) reinforced Ti composites were synthesized using vacuum hot-press sintering and hot rolling. The effect of weight fraction of MWCNTs on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the Ti composites was investigated. The results indicated that both proportion and particle size of TiC increased in proportion to MWCNTs content, which resulted in different matrix microstructure, and the grains were obviously refined after rolling deformation. The hardness tests indicated that MWCNTs addition could make the composites harden, and 18.4%improvement in hardness was obtained after hot rolling. The significant improvement in both strength and hardness could be attributed to grain refinement, solid solution strengthening of carbon and dispersion strengthening of TiC particles and remained MWCNTs. A good combination of strength and ductility were achieved in Ti–1 wt% MWCNTs composites, which were in accordance with the uniform distribution of smaller-sized TiC particles in Ti matrix.展开更多
