This novel diagnostic method utilized the loopmediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), micro fluidic chips and a confocal optical detector with a nonlinear fluorescent filter processor. An isothermal amplification based microfluidic chip for the early diagnostics of lung cancer was developed and a confocal optical detector was improved by a novel real-time fluorescent filter to sensitively monitor the DNA amplification procedure with high signal to noise ratio and fluorescence collecting ability. Experiment showed that a rapid diagnostic of lung cancer by detecting the existence of the CEA mRNA could be performed in only 5 laL of reaction assay in less than 45 min. While the traditional intube RTPCR set consumed more than 25 -μL of the assay and took more than 90 rain.展开更多

MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) technology is used in the fabrication of the microelectrode array, which is designed to perform signal recording and electrical stimulation for nerves in neural engineering. A simple fabrication process is developed. An improved model of microelectrodes is brought forward and successfully validated by the excellent match between circuit simulations and electrical measurements, including both magnitude and phase of microelectrode impedance. Compared with the simple one that is usually used, the improved model is believed to be an advance and more accurate. This modeling helps to improve the design of microelectrodes and understand the behavior of interface between electrode and cell. Furthermore, the microelectrode is proved to be a feasible tool for researches in neural engineering by successfully recording neural activities of sciatic nerve of a bullfrog.展开更多

This has motivated us to estimate the health risk index (HRI) of heavy metals from four commercially important and highly exploited bivalve species which are abundant in the bay. Samples (n = 30) of green mussel (Perna viridis), Asiatic hard clam (Meretrix meretrix), Pacific oyster (Crassosstrea gigas) and marsh clam (Polymesoda expans) were acquired from fishermen in Kg. Teritipan, Marudu Bay. These bivalves were analyzed for heavy metals content using the Inductively Couples Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The study found that the mean contents of Arsenic (As) and Manganese (Mn) in all analyzed bivalves exceeded the permissible limits as well as copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in Pacific oyster, and Zn in marsh clam. It was also noticed that consumption of different bivalve species may bring about health risk from different metals as indicated by varied Total Hazard Index (THI) values. Consumption of the four bivalves was noticed to promote high health risk from As intoxication. Although metal pollution index (MPI) analysis revealed that the bivalves from the bay are currently not seriously impacted by heavy metal pollution, vigorous efforts should be taken to preserve the natural condition of the bay for years to come. There are several ways to minimize health issues from bivalve consumption which include keeping the bivalve natural habitat away from heavy metals pollution by strictly enforcing environmental laws and policies, establishing zones for bivalve fisheries, monitoring heavy metals concentration in bivalve on a regular basis and making depuration process a compulsory requirement in every seafood restaurant throughout the country.展开更多

Metals analysed were copper, nickel, mangenese, chromium, iron lead and cobalt. These metals were detected in the above samples. Vegetation samples concentration in copper, manganese, chromium, iron and cobalt were higher than those obtained in bottom sediments. The tail part of the fish contents of trace metals were also higher than those of the head. The results obtained in this work exceeded the results of water analysis carried out by Omoregha on the same river. Metals such as copper, nickel, manganese and chromium were below detection limit in the water from the same river. The bioaccumulation of these trace metals in these samples were traced to activities of Delta Glass Factory.展开更多
