In the context of the new historicism, this paper interprets the novel Atonement by the famous contemporary British writer Ian McEwan, and explores how McEwan breaks through the scope of traditional historicist criticism and focuses on the history of marginal people and individual families on the edge of power, interspersing the fate of individuals and the rise and fall of families in the main line of the text, and showing a “rewritten” and “multifaceted” history. It then explores how the writer fills in the gaps in history, reconstructs the missing historical memories, and avoids the ideological domination of mainstream history by depicting the real historical material of the battle of Dunkirk. Finally, this paper explores how the author, by shifting the perspective, releases the mute confinement of women in traditional history and empowers them to speak about the real history and pursue the value of their individual lives. By exploring the new historicist perspective in Atonement, this paper attempts to show the hidden ideological and power discourse system behind the novel’s text and provoke readers to think about the “truthfulness” of history, in order to add new perspectives to the study of Atonement.
