Mao Ze-dong's character of advocating independence is the mental basis on which his thought of self-reliance took shape,and his particular experience and deep understanding of Chinese society is the prerequisite. The fundamental theory of self-reliance expounded by Marxism constitutes essential structure of Mao's self-reliance thought . The doctrine of the unity of knowing and doing existing in traditional Chinese culture is the cultural background.
