《左传》中的“杨盾”当是“鍚盾”,鍚的本义是鍚金,即古代一种珍贵的铜类合金,其本字古作“昜”后作“鍚”,“鍚金”可以用来作盾饰,这种以鍚金为饰之盾名之为鍚盾,文中所言之鍚盾当是一种礼器。“鍚盾”误作“杨盾”是因为鍚、杨同音通假。
Yangdun(楊盾) in Zuozhuan(左传) should be explained as '鍚盾' , for the original meaning of '鍚' means 鍚金, a kind of precious copper alloy in ancient times . The original character of '鍚' is '易' and it was changed later as '鍚' . '鍚金' could be used as ornaments for shields, and so the shield with 鍚金 ornament was named '鍚盾', but '鍚盾' in Zuozhuan(左传) should be a kind of sac-rificial vessels, '鍚盾' was mistakenly regarded as '楊盾' because 鍚 and 楊 are homophones and can be loaned by each other.
