As the leading value trend at the turning point toward the modern times in Chinese history, the radicalism of the May 4th Culture has produced a far-reaching impact on the realization of literary modernity. Revolution, the symbolic wording in the radicalism of the May 4th Culture, provides the impetus for the growth of the literary modernity; however, its linear mode of thinking mistreats the traditional as an opposite to the modernity, embracing Europeanization the only way out, thus causing the loss of literary modernity. Enlightenment, the core of modernity in the 20th century, while endowing literary modernity with essential connotations, impairs aesthetics for its misunderstanding of homoorganicity between arts and history, and makes literary independence hard to illustrate by degrading literature only as arms.
