Situated in the southwest frontier of China, Yunnan had always been regarded as 'a barbarian region' and a marginal place of culture in history. Since the Ming Dynasty, the marginal culture of Yunnan had been assimilated to the mainstream culture of the Han in the course of the national political integration. Women, as also the carrier of local culture of Yunnan, had been greatly influenced by the Han culture during this course. Consequently, virtuous women had emerged in large numbers who were recorded in the annals of Yunnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasties known as women of moral integrity, filial women of moral integrity, women of chastity, women staunch with moral integrity, and merciful mothers. This special group of women in the history of Yunnan has farreaching cultural connotations.
