摘要
海丝特是霍桑的浪漫小说《红字》中的女主人公。霍桑赋予了她进步与保守两个截然对立的形象。这部小说随着红字含义的变化记述了海丝特由一个新女性到一个传统女性的演变,这是一个由表及里的渐变过程。霍桑对海丝特的形象塑造反映了他对变革与稳定的思想困惑。
Hester is the heroine in Hawthorne' s romantic novel The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne grants her two sharply contrasted images of progression and conservation. The novel, with the changing connotation of the scarlet letter, relates Hester' s evolution from a new woman to a traditional woman, a declining process from external to internal. Hawthorne s creation of Hester reflects his mental perplexity to reform and stability.
