Dragon dance and lion dance sports are treasures of traditional Chinese culture with a history of more than 2,000 years. With a long history and broad mass basis, they both have quite high artistic values. The profound cultural heritage of the Chinese nation can be understood from the lively scenes and strong ethnic atmosphere of dragon dancing and lion dancing. It is a task of top priority to carry forward and develop this culture with national characteristics, make it integrate into the development trend of modern society, and have a further blending with modern culture for a simultaneous development. But in recent decades, with the penetration of European and American commercial culture on sports, the development of Western sports is mushrooming considerably in China, and our traditional dragon dance and lion dance sports have not yet been well promoted and developed. Dragon dance and lion dance sports are not only sports events for fitness, recreation, performance and competition, but also are traditional folk sports with prominent nationality, ornamental feature and popularity. And, traditional dragon dance and lion dance sports enjoy a higher favor in developed regions and areas like Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. However, there are also many existing problems in dragon dance and lion dance sports in such aspects as talent training, inheritance and development modes. It is of positive significance to study the inheritance of dragon dance and lion dance sports and explore a path for sustainable development.
