Compositions of trace elements in Chinese and Korean river sediments were different. Trace element concentrations in Korean river sediments mainly lie between those of the Yangtze River sediments, which have the highest average values for most elements, and the Yellow River sediments, which present the lowest values except for Sr. The concentrations of Li, Rb and Th in Korean river sediments are higher than those in the Yangtze and Yellow River sediments, but have significant grain size effect. Sr mostly resides in feldspar in Korean river sediments, but it is largely found in carbonate minerals in the Yangtze and Yellow River sediments. Elements such as Ti, Nb, Zr, Sc, Th, Ba, Rb, and Sr have the largest contents in residual fraction of the Korean river sediments, while Mn and Pb mostly exist in 1 M HClleachable fractions, suggesting human pollution effect on river geochemistry. Conclusively, Ti, Ti/Nb, Zr/Nb, and Cr/Th can be used to recognize sediment sources (that is to say, where the sediments come from? From the Yangtze River, Yellow River or Korean Keum and Yeongsan Rivers) in view of their stable behaviors and distinct compositions among these river sediments. These geochemical indices, therefore, can be used to identify and trace these river matters in the West Pacific seas, especially in the Yellow Sea which is just surrounded by China continent and Korea Peninsula.
