Ethical literary criticism has been developing in Chinese academia for more than a decade. A theoretical breakthrough is made in the introduction of Sphinx factor, a combination of rational and animal factors, to label complicated human nature. Such a poetic and metaphorical terminology regards literature as manifestation of ethical conflicts among rational will, natural will and irrational will, e. g. expression of Sphinx factor and its variations. However, the register of such a fresh term as well as its relationship with other well-established critical terms needs more verification in critical practice. The Old Man and the Sea as a frequently-cited text in ethical literary criticism can be reread in the framework of Sphinx factor, ethical trespass and other key terms to test their terminological value and limitation. It is found that terminological efficiency well depends on contextuality and anti-ethical self-animalization is no rare case for a rational purpose. So more conceptual work is need in terminology to strengthen ethical literary criticism as a promising field.
