The emergence and development of English Studies are closely associated with the tradition of British culturalism. As a humanistic subject, English Studies have been shaped by the traditional methodology of British higher education and its gentry system. This paper recalls the historical development of English Studies and presents essential discussion on this subject and literary canon, advanced by Mathew Arnold and other literary critics.
