The present paper is an explorative attempt to study the relation between the stripes on both sides of the body and the sex of the green bamboo snake, Trimeresurus s. stejnegeri Schmidt. The results of this investigation are summarized in tables 1, 2 and 3. In the bamboo green snake, there is a white or white-red stripe on each side of the body. The majority of the snakes which poccess white stripes are females, whereas only 5% of them being males. Of the 77 specimens which poc- cess white-red stripes, 70. 1% of them are males and 29.9% are females. The place to which the anterior end of the side stripe reaches may bossibly be used as a character for distinguishing the sex of the snake. The white stripe ex- tends forward to the neck but seldom to the head of the female. On the other hand, the white-red stripe runs forward to the eye or mouth in the male but extends only to or far from the neck in the female.
