This paper is a preliminary research of two turtle shells with inscriptions excavated from the site of the Zhou Duke Temple(Zhougongmiao). The author’s opinions are:1)The two shells can be dated to the last years of the Shang Dynasty.2)The finding of a new term to describe moon shape change will challenge the traditional theory, which infers that the Zhou people divided a lunar month into four phases and gave each phase a special name.Based on the new discovery,it seems that the days between Chu Ji(初吉the first day of a month),Ji Wang(既望the fifteenth day of a month)and Hui(晦the last day of a month)is divided into six phases;Zai Shengba哉生霸,Pang Shengba旁生霸,Ji Shengba既生霸,and Zai Siba哉死霸,Pang Siba,旁死霸,Ji Siba既死霸.3)The character wang(king)in the inscriptions might refer to a Shang King instead of a Zhou King.4)The place names in the inscriptions probably refer to some locations in southern Shanxi.5)Oracle shells discovered before are all fragments which are difficult to be reconstructed. The newly discovered shells are big in size and obviously parts of large turtles.6)We are so lucky to find these shells with many characters that will help us to interpret the grammar structure of the Western Zhou oracle inscriptions.
