Because of their chemical inertness, isotopes of noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe) are considered to be ideal tracers in resolving problems such as the origin of the solar system, evolution of the planets, Earth's formation, mantle evolution and dynamics, atmospheric degassing and evolution, ocean circulation, and dynamics of aquifer systems, as well as many other geological problems. Halogen volatiles (mainly Cl, Br and I) are commonly used to distinguish saline fluids and provide information on their sources and fluid mixture. The paper reviews the application of He and Ar isotopes and halogen in fluid inclusions to tracing the origin of contemporary hydrothermal fluids and fossil ore-forming fluids. It is thought that such tracers have great superiority over other isotopes to study the origin of ore-forming fluids. They will be a useful tool in tracing fluid-heat transportation, forecasting large ore-concentration areas, resolving such arguing geological problems as mantle plume, and, furthermore, in breaking the back to find out the origin of ore-forming fluids.
