The excitatory neurotoxicity of glutamate is one of the main factors causing damage and death of retinal ganglion cells. Gluta-mate transporters are ultimately responsible for maintaining the appropriate extracellular glutamate concentration. GLAST is a major glutamate transporter expressed on the membrane of Muller cells and its modulation at the molecular and protein level may be a substrate-induced feedback regulation.
