Operations such as cutting, digging, drilling, shaving and shoving are often performed while dealing with various kinds of materials like soil or metal by human beings. How to optimize the geometric shape of operating tools to reduce the adhesion against operated materials and reduce the operating resistance, thus enhancing operation efficiency and decreasing the cost of operations, are always paid more attention by human beings.Spermophilus dauricus(a kind of field mouse), which possess outstanding abilities of digging, reducing resistance and anti-adhesion against soil,is chose as research object in this paper. The geometric characteristics of its claws' shapes, especially the contour lines of the claws' longitudinal sections, are observed and analyzed with a computer image micro-analysis system. It is discovered that the toes of this kind of animal's claws generally have the feature of changing curvature along their soil-engaging surfaces. The possible cutting surfaces of cutting tools are analyzed based on the concept of curvature so that new design concepts can be derived using bionic methodologies.
