唐代张彦远在《历代名画记》里曾描述张璪以'手摸素娟'的作画情形,这或许是以手指作画的最早记载。从某种意义上讲,虽然张璪创发了以指作画的先机,但之后却并没有演变成一个宗派或画种,只不过指画是历代文人画家偶为的'墨戏'而已。直到清初辽宁铁岭人高其佩才完整提出以指作画的法理及审美取向,并穷其毕生精力探索指墨艺术规律与真谛,创作了大量题材丰富的指墨作品,在中国绘画史上产生了深远影响。自此,指墨画成为中国绘画之一画科或画法。
