WhatrolemighttheJadeGuiplayintheconstructionofChineseritualdiscourseWhendidthediscoursesystemstartAndhowdidtheJadeGuiparticipate in the construction of the ritual discourse? The archaeological findings and the literature texts handed down from ancient times provide a possible answer to these questions. This paper focuses on the myth of the jade Gui which is the godsent and the etiquette of holding a Gui in one’s hands, based on the multiple evidences such as unearthed objects, character configuration, and documentary records etc. From the jade Fuyue(an axe-shaped weapon in ancient times), the stone dagger-axe and the Yuanguixianfu in the Lingjiatan site 5300 years ago to the Jade Gui in the Taosi site and Shandong Longshan culture of around 4300 years, and from the Jade Gui in the Yin Ruins around 3300 years to the Jade Gui and ivory hand-board held by ministers in the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty, this paper systematically presents the source and schools of Jade Gui. All previous rulers attached great importance to the context of this ritual vessel(i.e. Jade Gui) and the kingship faith from the God behind the construction of Chinese ritual discourse, which makes the unique sacrificial vessel in Chinese culture restate the unique story of Chinese civilization.
