Generally speaking, ancient Chinese characters, especial the simple ones that are on many occasions radicals in other characters, are pictographs. Therefore, the study of ancient Chinese characters should begin with the simple ones. The most famous linguist, Xu Shen in the Eastern Han Dynasty proposed that 'the meaning of characters, which are made up two radicals one of which represents meaning and the other sound, can be determined by their sounds' simply because at that time the ascriptions on bones and tortoise shells were not discovered yet and thus he was not able to understand the shapes of some radicals which are used to indicate meaning and misinterpreted some simple characters among which 'zi', which he misinterpreted as 'bi' (nose), is an example.
