Song of Songs in the Old Testament is the only poetic anthology that takes love as its theme. In its original sense, as is reflected in the Old Testament, the Hebrews did not have separate soul from flesh and in particular, they did not have the notions of foul flesh or pure spirit. In late times, the theme of love in the Song of Songs was interpreted as the love of God to the Israeli and the love of Jesus Christ to the Christian church. Thus, the mundane love in the Song of Songs is sanctified as the moral and symbolic religious love.
