The vocabulary of modern Chinese now boasts of hundreds of loanwords from the English language, among which transliterations account for a large percentage.Since the beginning of the contact between the Chinese language and the English language, the former began to borrow words from the latter and as a very handy technique, transliteration was used to provide Chinese equivalents for English borrowings that were mostly culture-specific words.English-Chinese dictionaries published in the late Qing Dynasty, the first batch in English-Chinese lexicography, recorded what happened after such language contact,as is attested by the inclusion of many transliterations therein.Based on a preliminary study on such transliterated words, mainly from two perspectives—taxonomy and evolution, this paper attempts to present a rough picture of the earliest group of transliterations originating from English.
