CAS Launches Joint Project for SARS Research

摘要 Facing the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in someregions of China, the Chinese government looks to science and technology for combating the killervirus. CAS, which is eager to meet the emergent needs of the country, has placed scientific researchfor SARS control as its priority. A CAS leading group for SARS control was established in mid-Aprilwith President Lu Yongxiang as its head and vice presidents Chen Zhu and Yang Bailing as its viceleaders. During an inspection to CAS institutes, President Lu Yongxiang calls for concerted effortsof CAS researchers to make contributions to the fight against SARS. He emphasizes that CAS shouldaddress specific SARS issues with state-of-the-art technology, including molecular aetiology andstudies on tests, vaccines and medicines. Under the unified leadership of the CPC Central Committeeand State Council, CAS deployed a picked interdisciplinary research force into the fight against theepidemic. An emergency project for SARS diagnosis, prevention and treatment has been launched. Thisjoint project involves various CAS institutes in difference fields, including the CAS BeijingGenomics Institute, the CAS Wuhan Institute of Virology, the CAS Institute of Microbiology, and theCAS Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences.
